Queensland Health issues alert for venues in Cairns

Queensland’s list of exposure sites has grown once again after a new infection was confirmed in the state’s far north.

Queensland Health revealed on Tuesday evening a new local infection had been detected in Cairns, which triggered another jump in the number of close contact venues across the state.

Authorities appear particularly concerned about a childcare center in Trinity Beach to the north of Cairns, which has an alert issue spanning 48 straight hours.

In the southeast, where the Palaszczuk government has ordered a strict lockdown to Sunday, Brisbane Girls Grammar School has now been upgraded to a close contact site.

The entire Spring Hill campus and its open day and extra-curricular activities on Friday have now been deemed a close contact site, stretching from 8am until 8.30pm.

Under health directives, anyone who has deemed a close contact after visiting a high-risk exposure venue is ordered to isolate for 14-days regardless of a test result.

New close contact sites in the far north:

Trinity Beach, Bluewater Village Early Learning, 1-7 Maritime Way, the entirety of Monday, August 2, and Tuesday, August 3

Yorkeys Knob, Hidden Café, 12-14 Deauville Close, 10am – 12.15pm

Health authorities were scrambling to complete contact tracing on Tuesday night after an alert for Cairns, Trinity Beach, and Yorkeys Knob.

“Tests are currently being performed to determine whether there is any infection risk to the community,” Queensland Health said.

“Testing capacity is being increased in the Cairns and Hinterland Health Service region.”

On Tuesday evening, it was not yet known if the case was linked to the Delta cluster plaguing the state’s southeast, but the development was a concern amid the escalating outbreak.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young confirmed 400 healthcare workers had been forced into isolation due to the virus.

“We know this is a significant number of healthcare workers in quarantine, and unfortunately, it means we have to delay non-urgent surgery and outpatient services as a result,” she said.
